EXPERT’S VIEW
An interview is carried out on 28 December 2020 by the group leader, Ikhwan. Due to the Covid issue, we have no choice but to carry out this interview via Zoom meeting. We are honoured to invite our interviewer, Mr Muhammad Zahier bin Razmi which is going to share his experience as a bystander that witness cyberbullying. He is 22 years old and just graduated from International Islamic College under Diploma in Computer Science, and currently waiting to continue his further studies.
Mr Zahier’s friend who came from the same college as him had been cyberbullied when they are still studying in college. He mentioned that he can see the changes in his friend's behaviour after being cyberbullied. His friend once was a cheerful person, but after being cyberbullied, he has very low self-esteem, suffers in depression and his weight decrease rapidly. This situation has haunted him for at least a month and it is not easy for his friend to come out from depression.
To help his friend to go through this, Mr Zahier advised his friend to stay away from the social media. In his opinion, the victims need time to calm down so that they would not make an impulsive decision that might ruin their lives. As we know that the time heals, so he strongly suggests that one should withdraw himself from social media if he is being cyberbullied.
He said that actually bully exist since long ago. However, when our technology becomes more advanced, the “old fashion” bully has been transforming to bully on social networks. Mr Zahier thinks that everyone has the responsibility in solving this issue. Unfortunately, some don’t take it seriously. This makes the situation worst as no one willing to stand up or voice up to stop this issue. In his opinion, cyberbullying happens because the cyberbullies feel that they are powerful and popular when they bullied others and get likes from the supporters. Some also bullied others as they want to cover their own weaknesses so that others do not find that he or she is weak.
Mr Zahier also commented on the three solutions we have suggested before. For the first solution related to the parent’s role, he said that parents indeed play a role to monitor their children behaviour and activities in social media. Parents have to filter the information for their children that is still young and immature. For the second point where schools’ involvement take in. Schools have to teach students not to cyberbully others, for example, handicapped, no matters in terms of physical or mental. For the third point, social media can block or we can report the post or comments that are negative. If one found that the comments make them feel uncomfortable, then they can block or report it and these posts will then be deleted.
In his point of view, the best solution is to report the negative comments and block the user that are putting the negative comments. This will aid to prevent more negative comments being spread and disabled others to see these comments. Lastly, he hopes that what we have discussed will help the victims out there and stop the cyberbullying issue so that we can live a happy life.
